A BRIEF HISTORY OF WINDOW TREATMENTS

..There are many ways a home owner can treat a window. Casement and draperies are most universally functional, attractive, economical and flexible.

..Curtains used to be cloths hung to cover cold walls or to fill open doorways to keep the heat in (winter) and heat out (summer). Windows as we know them now, were nonexistent at that time.

..In the fortresses, like castles of the middle ages, windows were hardly more than slits in thick walls. As the years went by, the homes of the wealthy began to have huge windows. Gradually, simple curtains were devised - cloths hung by metal rings on ornate rods - which extended beyond the opening so that fabric could be drawn from the window by the day and back by the night.

..First the styles were very simple even though the fabrics were very ornate - like heavy damasks, brocades, velvets, with intricate embroideries and trims and braids and tassels. Then the styles also started to become very lavish.

..By the time the Victorian era came, lace curtains were added for privacy. Then came the modern era with different styles like pinch pleated drapes.

..Today, it is the best of all times; windows can be dressed up with a wonderful range of fabrics and styles keeping in mind the home owners' own likes and dislikes.
