MEASURING FOR CORNICE WHEN IT IS USED ALONE
1) FACE WIDTH:
Measure from one end of the window or the door to the other end including any frames. To this measurement add (2" for each side) 4" extra for side clearance of the cornice.
NOTE: If one so desire, the width can be extended to any distance beyond the window or the door. One can also go wall to wall. But in these situations from decorative point of view, there should be some kind of under treatment (ex. Sheer, drapery or vertical) underneath the cornice rather than the bare walls. Measuring will then change accordingly.
For ex.: Measurement from one end to the other end of the window is 56"
2" each side leeway for clearance so face width is 56" + 2" + 2" = 60"
2) RETURNS:
It is the projection from the wall into the room. While choosing the measurement for the return, keep in mind that nothing is obstructed under the cornice as well as it is not protruding too much in the room. Generally a 3 ½" return on each side is recommended when there is no under treatment.
FINISHED WIDTH = Face Width + Returns.
This is the measurement required for ordering for ex. If face is 60" (56 + 2 + 2) and returns are 3 ½" on each side. Then the finished width is - 60 + 3 ½+ 3 ½ = 67".
3) FINISHED LENGTH (HEIGHT):
It is the distance from the top of the cornice to the bottom of the cornice.
A straight cornice will have one length measurement. Others will have what is called a longer point and shorter point.
Standard length (height) is up to 20" maximum. Measure the longer point required for the cornice keeping in mind that the shorter point should be at least 3" below the frame of the window (lintel) so that when the cornice is installed the frame will not show.
Note: If there is more than one cornice in a room it is recommended to have them in same length, and also at the same heights.

MEASURING FOR CORNICE WHEN IT IS GOING OVER OTHER OUTSIDE MOUNT TREATMENT
OUTSIDE MOUNT: It means any treatment mounted on the wall or the ceiling, or even on the window frame but outside the window , rather than inside the window.
1) FACE WIDTH:
When a cornice board is mounted over another treatment then it requires extra width.
First take rod bracket to bracket measurement of the under treatment.
To this measurement - add 4" (2" for each side) to allow unobstructed flow of the under treatment. Add another 4" (2" for each side) for proper cornice clearance.
For ex.
